Some Clinicians Don’t Have the Training for a Proper Suicide Risk Assessment

Sadly, there are some clinicians that do not have the necessary training to conduct suicide risk assessments that are proper. Clinicians in the mental health care field often only receive a small amount of training in the proper way to handle a person that is suicidal. Even though they may have an extensive level of training, a majority of physicians that start a practice only have about 6 to 8 hours of general psychiatry training. Although there are several medical schools that are expanding on training for mental health, it is also the first area to go when budget cuts are made.

When adequate standard of care is supplied and mental health care professionals act in a responsible manner, no lawsuits are filed. Being responsible is an attribute that comes with training, although the men and women receiving training should be caring, compassionate, and genuinely care the field of mental health.
